Abstract

This study aims to explore communication barriers between a mother and her adolescent child and their impact on family harmony, focusing on the phenomenon of phubbing and dysfunctional conflict patterns. A qualitative case study design is proposed, involving one mother-adolescent dyad as the research participants, selected purposively based on a prior family assessment that identified significant communication difficulties. Data will be collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and behavioral observation during family interaction, then analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns of communication barriers, conflict resolution styles, and emotion regulation. The study is expected to reveal how blaming communication patterns from the parent and avoidance or silent treatment responses from the adolescent interact to erode family equality and closeness. Findings are anticipated to provide an empirical basis for designing communication-based family interventions, particularly those addressing technology-related disengagement and emotion regulation skills within the parent-child relationship.
