Abstract

The qudsi hadith stating, "If he comes to Me walking, I come to him running" (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī No. 7405), is one of the traditions concerning the Divine Attributes (aḥādīth al-ṣifāt) that carries profound theological and spiritual significance. This hadith has often generated differing interpretations when understood literally without considering the methodology of hadith commentary (sharḥ al-ḥadīth) and the theological principles of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the phrase وَإِنْ أَتَانِي يَمْشِي أَتَيْتُهُ هَرْوَلَةً based on the interpretations of classical scholars and to examine its relevance in strengthening Islamic creed and Muslim spirituality in the digital era. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research. Primary sources include Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Fatḥ al-Bārī, Al-Minhāj Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and Jāmi‘ al-‘Ulūm wa al-Ḥikam, while secondary sources consist of scholarly books and journal articles relevant to the topic. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using descriptive-analytical and comparative methods. The findings reveal that the expressions yamshī ("walking") and harwalah ("running") should not be understood as literal physical actions attributed to Allah, but rather as figurative expressions signifying the swiftness of Allah's mercy, forgiveness, guidance, and acceptance toward servants who strive to draw closer to Him. This interpretation is consistent with the principle of tanzīh, which affirms Allah's transcendence beyond any resemblance to His creation. Furthermore, the hadith contributes significantly to strengthening Islamic creed, nurturing spirituality, fostering spiritual resilience, promoting mental well-being, encouraging religious moderation, developing moral character, and supporting the transformation of digital Islamic preaching. Therefore, understanding this hadith through the methodology of sharḥ al-ḥadīth is essential for preserving its authentic meaning and ensuring its continued relevance in addressing the challenges faced by contemporary Muslims.
