Abstract

Short films are one way of creative expression that is often utilized by students as a means to convey ideas, including Islamic principles. As an audiovisual work, short films have a significant ability to convey moral and spiritual messages through visual symbols, stories, and audio components. This study aims to identify the way Islamic values are represented in short films made by university students by applying a semiotic approach. The analytical method applied refers to Roland Barthes' semiotic theory which divides meaning into two levels, namely denotation and connotation, as well as the concept of myth which relates to the social and cultural acceptance of meaning. The findings of the study show that the short films made by students utilize various symbols such as Muslim clothing, calligraphy, the sound of the azan, and religious conversations to convey Islamic messages. In addition, the storyline often reflects a change of character from the battle of the world towards a sense of life that is more in line with Islamic values. These representations act not only as entertainment, but also as a medium of education and da'wah that is in accordance with the context of the current young generation. Therefore, short films by students can serve as an alternative means of disseminating creative and innovative Islamic values.
