Abstract

Writing skills in the learning process are crucial for academic development and language proficiency. One way to foster these skills is through the Genre-Based Approach (GBA). The aim of this study is to describe the steps, strengths, and weaknesses of implementing the Genre-Based Approach in language learning at MTs Negeri 4 Klaten, MTs Negeri 5 Karanganyar, and MAN 1 Kebumen. This research uses a qualitative approach. The subjects of the study are teachers at the three institutions. The informants are language teachers. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this study are: 1) The steps of the Genre-Based Approach include: Building the Context, Modeling and Deconstructing the Text, Joint Construction of the Text, and Independent Construction of the Text; 2)The strengths of the Genre-Based Approach include: support for understanding social context, clear structure, authenticity-based learning, and scaffolding; 3) The weaknesses of the Genre-Based Approach are: limited emphasis on creativity, time and preparation requirements, and unsuitability for all students. The conclusion of this research is that the Genre-Based Approach can be applied in the learning process as an effort to improve writing skills, and it is effective in enhancing language proficiency at the madrasah or school level.
