Abstract

This study analyzes the meaning of love language as a communication accommodation tool among middle-aged married couples in a rural area, and describes the love language symbols used in their marital life. It is motivated by the limited number of studies on love language among middle-aged rural couples and the absence of research linking love language with Communication Accommodation Theory. This study uses a qualitative method with Alfred Schutz's social phenomenology approach. The subjects are two middle-aged married couples (aged 40-60) in Mekarrahayu Village, Margaasih Subdistrict, Bandung Regency, selected through purposive sampling, with triangulation through interviews with one child from each couple. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies, analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results show love language is interpreted not as a fixed category, but as an evolving communication accommodation process, with acts of service as the dominant love language. Love language symbols form through symbolic convergence into shared rhetorical visions, reinforced by Sundanese cultural values. The study recommends couples understand love language as an ongoing mutual adjustment process.
