Abstract

The customary marriage law in the Lampung ethnic community is an essential aspect that regulates the social and cultural life of the Lampung people. Marriage in the Lampung community is not merely a social ceremony but is also grounded in legal values passed down through generations. This article aims to explore the fundamental principles of the Lampung customary marriage law and its application in everyday life. The study employs a qualitative approach through literature review and interviews with local customary leaders to understand the processes and requirements of marriage, including the rights and obligations of both partners and their extended families in the ceremony. The findings reveal that the Lampung customary marriage law has several distinctive characteristics, such as the significant role of the extended family and community in the process, as well as various traditions and rituals that must be performed by both parties. Moreover, this customary law functions to maintain social harmony and regulate inheritance distribution. Although the Lampung customary marriage law continues to be highly respected, several challenges have arisen due to modernization and social change. Therefore, it is crucial to preserve this customary law while adapting it to the evolving social dynamics.
