Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language variations and types from a sociolinguistic perspective found in the YouTube content "Jerome Goes to School" at SMK Bagimu Negeriku (My Country Vocational High School), presented by Jerome Polin. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis methods. The research data, in the form of spoken language taken from the YouTube video, were then transcribed and analyzed based on the theory of language variation in sociolinguistics. The results indicate various language variations, including speaker-based language variations (idiolect and sociolect), situation-based language variations (casual and intimate), and language variations based on medium (spoken language). Furthermore, the use of code-mixing and code-switching between Indonesian, English, and slang was also found, reflecting the speakers' backgrounds and the informal and educational context of communication. The use of these language variations serves to create closeness between the presenter and students and makes the material more communicative and engaging. Thus, the YouTube content "Jerome Goes to School" can be a relevant object of sociolinguistic study in understanding the dynamics of language use in social media and education.
