Abstract

Shivering is a common complication in patients following spinal anesthesia, resulting from a disruption in thermoregulatory mechanism that leads to a drop in body temperature. This condition can increase oxygen consumption, metabolic demands, and patient discomfort. Preventive meausres include the use of warm intravenous fluids and blanket warmers. Objectives is to determine the difference in effectiveness between the use of warm intravenous fluids and blanket warmers regarding the incidence of shivering in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia at tha Central General Hospital (RSUP) Surakarta. This study empoloyed a quasi-experimental design with a post-test-only control group approach. The sample consisted of 58 respondents divided into a warm intravenous fluid group and a blanket warmers group. Purposive sampling was used for participant selection. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test. The Mann-Whitney test result showed an Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.025 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. The mean rank for the blanket warmer group (25.40) was lower than that for the warm intravenous fluid group (33.60), suggesting that blanket warmers are more effective at reducing the incidence of shivering. There is difference in effectiveness between warm intravenous fluids and blanket warmers in reducing the indicence of shivering in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia at RSUP Surakarta. Blanket warmers proved to be more effective than warm intravenouid fluids in preventing shivering.
