Abstract

Consumption is an economic activity inseparable from human life. The development of digital technology, social media, and e-commerce has shifted patterns of public consumption. The convenience of online shopping facilitated by promotions, discounts, flash sales, and lifestyle trends can drive individuals to consume goods and services based not only on needs but also on desires. From the perspective of Islamic economic philosophy, consumption is not merely about fulfilling material needs; it also encompasses moral and spiritual dimensions. Islam establishes principles for consumption, including the fulfillment of needs through items that are halal (permissible) and tayyib (wholesome), the attainment of maslahah (public interest/well-being), the maintenance of balance, and the prohibition of israf (excessiveness) and tabzir (wastefulness). This article aims to analyze the concept of consumption within the framework of Islamic economic philosophy and its relevance to contemporary consumer behavior. The study employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing a literature review approach that examines books, scholarly journals, and Islamic sources pertaining to consumption. The findings indicate that the Islamic concept of consumption remains highly relevant in addressing shifts in modern consumer behavior, as it provides moral boundaries that ensure consumption activities are not driven solely by the pursuit of material satisfaction, but also account for benefits, genuine needs, responsibilities, and Islamic values.
